Protocole de veille ordinaire

The usual pitfall in inner observation practices is their confinement to dedicated contexts: the formal session, the retreat moment, the circumscribed exercise. Outside these spaces, the rest of existence flows without notable observation.

The Laboratory designates by “ordinary watchfulness” an alternative protocol: the introduction of a continuous, non-intrusive observation into standard daily activities. Walking, preparing a meal, driving, waiting — any space where attention is not fully required by the task becomes an opportunity for observation.

The protocol does not ask one to meditate while walking. It asks one to maintain a background awareness of the inner state while activities proceed normally. The distinction is important: formal meditation mobilises attention. Ordinary watchfulness functions in parallel with habitual mobilisation.

Prerequisites

  1. Having established an observation practice in a formal context, however brief, to have a basic vocabulary of inner states.
  2. Identifying two or three daily activities as “watchfulness windows” — recurring and predictable moments.
  3. Not seeking to observe anything in particular. Watchfulness is first an orientation, not a content.

Common difficulties include systematic forgetting — resolved by simple physical anchors — and the tendency to transform watchfulness into performance, which immediately neutralises it.

After several weeks of regular practice, what changes is not so much the content of what one observes as the tolerance for remaining present with that content without immediate intervention. That is the first measurable result of the protocol.
