Forgetting as a Condition of Exploration

Why does human consciousness seem to be born in forgetting of what it is? This classical philosophical question takes on a practical dimension when approached through observation.

L'oubli comme condition de l'exploration

Human experience begins in a relative opacity to itself. The sense of belonging to a vaster reality — when it appears in the course of a life — is never given from the outset. It is won.

A hypothesis formulated by several traditions, and which the Laboratory’s observation finds plausible, is that this forgetting is not a defect: it is the very condition of exploration. Without forgetting, no discovery; without perceived separation, no reunion; without contrast, no relief.

This reading gives individual life a meaning other than pure success or pure suffering: it becomes a journey of progressive elucidation. Each experience is an opportunity to illuminate a part of what was latent.

Practically, this perspective changes the quality with which one moves through ordeals. Not because it makes them less painful, but because it restores their coherence — that of a movement of elucidation in which one is engaged, whether one wishes it or not.
