Conscience de la respiration hors meditation

The breath occupies a central place in virtually all formalised contemplative practices. This centrality is justified — but it has a cost: it associates breath awareness with the formal context, and only with it.

The Laboratory has documented the effects of a distinct practice: intermittent breath awareness in ordinary, non-meditative contexts. Ordinary breathing — in conversation, at work, in movement — presents characteristics that breathing in session does not.

What ordinary breathing reveals

  • Rhythm modifications linked to social interactions, often not consciously perceived.
  • Functional apnoeas at the moment of intense concentration.
  • Changes in depth associated with emotional transitions.
  • Defensive breathing — shallow and high — in situations of pressure.

This data is permanently available, but consciousness does not consult it in the absence of an established intention. The protocol consists in creating regular consultation moments throughout the day — not to modify the breath, but to read it.

What develops with practice: a sensitivity to the inner state that is no longer confined to formal sessions.
