Lac paisible — la paix au cœur du tumulte

One of the most practical fruits that sustained observation discipline can bring forth is the capacity to maintain a stable inner point, even in the most demanding periods.

This stability is not indifference. It does not exempt one from acting, nor from feeling. It is rather the capacity to traverse events while remaining in contact with something in oneself that does not allow itself to be swept away.

This quality is not acquired by decision. It is built slowly, as a habit of observation is deposited. By returning, in all circumstances, to this point of attention that persists whatever happens, one discovers that it is always accessible — including in moments when one would have sworn it was inaccessible.

Contemplative traditions call this by various names: equanimity, inner witness, centre. The word matters little. What matters is that this is a practical, verifiable acquisition that profoundly modifies the quality of everyday life.

It is one of the most precious fruits of a sustained exploration practice.
